Adding Start Here from the LOR in Brightspace

We want students to have a consistent location to find key course-related items like the Syllabus and Course Calendar, as well as campus-wide support information. The Start Here module is where this information is provided and should be the first item in your course's Table of Contents.

Task 1: Adding Start Here from the LOR

  1. Watch the first 1:30mins of the video on How to: Add Start Here and Restructure a Course in Brightspace
  2. Search for and enter course using Course Selector “waffle”
  3. Select Course Information folder from D2L Visual TOC or full Table of Contents
  4. Upload/Create > Add Object from LOR
    • Search For: start (click Search rather than <ENTER>)
    • Select radio > Next
  5. Leave as default “Dynamic Link to Newest Version” > Next > Create Topic
  6. Grab the move handle and shift out and to first item in Table of Contents list

Task 2: Relocating Syllabus and other important documents into Start Here

  1. Drag and drop Syllabus, Course Calendar, etc into Start Here (Start Here title block will highlight when selection to be place inside this folder)
    • If additional informational docs exist that require Course Information folder to be kept, say several internship or clinical docs, then leave
    • Note: If Textbook has only one item in it (say, an image of a book that is only offered in hard copy), drag that into Start here, place under Syllabus, and then delete Textbook folder item
  2. If Course Information is empty, select Actions arrow > Delete Module
  3. If Course Information still has documents, determine if/where they should shift to another folder.

Task 3: Setting up Start Here description

  1. Select Start Here title
  2. Add a description by copy/pasting the following > Update:

"Welcome to {OrgUnitName}!

Before you jump into the course content, please take a few minutes to review the following items. This brief orientation is to make you aware of some course-related information as well as a few PTC-related items."

Task 4: Reposition and Hide key items

  1. Reposition items
    • Place Syllabus after PLACEHOLDER: Syllabus) and other items.
    • Place Course Calendar after Syllabus
    • Place Online Faculty Checklist before Additionally Online (ONL) Information
    • Place Announcements log file after Additionally Online (ONL) Information
  2. Hide Instructor Checklist and PLACEHOLDER items
    • Bulk Edit > click on eye then click a second time to get line through eye
    • Click Done Editing once all desired items hidden
