How do I create a new rubric?

Rubrics are a great tool for assessment evaluation. They help ensure standardized grading and save time by providing a quick and consistent way to provide student feedback. Additionally they assist students in understanding where they did well and how to improve. Ideally, students can view rubrics prior to submission so that the assessment expectations are clear and attainable.

Want to use a current rubric as a base for a new rubric?

A rubric can be connected to multiple assessments, but cannot be edited once it has been used to assess learner's work to ensure that it stays valid for every learner for that assignment.

If you need similar, but different rubrics for an assessment, you don't need to recreate each time. You are able to copy a rubric, give it a new name, and make edits specific to the new assignment. Here's how:

  1. Course Tools > Course Admin > Rubrics
  2. open the Actions arrow > Copy
  3. Now you can go in and Edit the one called “Copy of….” to rename and make any adjustments.
