I just noticed my Quiz points don't match the Grades column points. How do I fix this?

For any given assessment, there are two tools that should be working together:

  1. Grades tool - which shows published results in the form of a gradebook
  2. one of the following Assessment tools
    • Quizzes tool - which houses the description, due date, questions, and other pertinent details related to this assessment item
    • Discussions tool - which houses the prompt, date restrictions, rubrics, etc.
    • Assignments tool - which houses the description, due dates, attachments, and other pertinent details related to this assessment item

It is important to verify (ideally in your TEMPLATES or in a section before any students have completed the assessment) that these tool are BOTH:

  • properly Associated with each other       AND
  • are using the same number of Max. Points for grade calculations

Why would this not already be correct?

Depending on the state of the Bb course that was imported, the most likely reasons are:

  • import error severing the assessment and Grades association
  • a manual grade column existed in Bb and was never associated with the original assessment
  • multiple Grades columns existed and the wrong one is associated

How do I spot this error once my class is running?

If when looking in Grades you see that a percentage is showing instead of points, it is likely that that the two tools are calculating from different Max. Points. Other clues include: a calculated percentage with more than two decimal places (eg. 86.33333333) or partial points for items that are typically whole numbers (eg. 4.88/5 instead of 4/5 or 5/5)

How do I fix this?

If this is caught before 1 or more students have completed the assessment, only Steps 1 and 2 below are needed. Here are the general steps that should be taken to resolve this issue:

  1. verify points in the Assessment tool (Assignment, DB, Quizzes)
  2. go to Grades > Manage Grades > Edit grade column Max. Points
  3. if the Quiz has been taken by 1 or more students, you need to republish with recalculation:
    1. go to Assessments > Quizzes
    2. select Quiz > Grade
    3. select all > Publish
      • NOTE: If this step is not done with Published scores, there WILL BE errors based on the recalculation of Max. Points.
  4. if recalculation is needed for an Assignment:
    1. go to Assessments > Assignments
    2. click on the assignment title > then select a submission attempt
    3. click in the Overall Grade box or on 1 item in the attached rubric
    4. click Update
    5. continue to move through users, repeating steps 3 and 4.
