How can I become a Vimeo Contributor?

Vimeo is a subscription video hosting and sharing service. We currently have the Vimeo Business subscription with 10 floating licenses to share. This license offers opportunities to collaborate with your team and additional services that you do not receive using the Vimeo Basic (free) account. If you need to upload videos for your course, please follow these 4 steps:

  1. Request a Vimeo Contributor license
  2. Set up a (free) Vimeo account
  3. Switch from your personal account to the PTC Business account
  4. Follow best practice in shared Vimeo folders

STEP 1: How do I request a Vimeo Contributor license?

  1. Fill out the short Vimeo Contributor license request form at https://forms.office.com/r/P6z78QPjRy
    • You will be asked for: Full Name, Location to contribute videos, and duration.
    • During high frequency times, there may be additional time limits set to ensure that everyone who needs to upload can.
    • The CETL can assist with uploads if needed.
  2. Once you have been assigned a license, you will receive an email notification with a link to your Departmental videos.
  3. Select the View folder link from the email..

STEP 2: Have I set up a (free) Vimeo account?

Once you select View Folder in the email, it will redirect you to Log into Vimeo. Do you have a Vimeo account attached to your PTC email?

  1. YES: Log in at https://vimeo.com/ with your PTC email then switch from your personal account to the PTC Business account (STEP 3 below).
    • This is NOT connected to your SSO credentials, your password will be something that you have chosen.
    • For organizational purposes: It is recommended that if you will/do have more than one video for a class to create a folder entitled “ABC123 Title of class” and upload all videos inside this folder.

  2. NO: Create a free account using your PTC email.
    1. From the login screen, look to the bottom for “Don't have an account?” > select Join 
    2. Create an account.
    3. If it asks you to try/start a free trial for a paid subscription, select “No thanks.”

STEP 3: How do I switch from my personal account to the PTC Business account?

  1. Use the email “View Folder” link to jump directly into the PTC account      …OR…
  2. Log into your free account at https://vimeo.com/ and switch accounts.
    • On the left-hand side, near the top click on your name > switch to PTC
  3. Follow best practices below when using Vimeo.

STEP 4: Best Practices to follow in shared Vimeo folders

This Vimeo Business license offers opportunities to collaborate with your team and additional services that you do not receive using the Vimeo Basic (free) account. Here are some best practices to follow:

  1. Turn on 2FA (2 Factor Authentication) in your personal Vimeo account: This helps to keep your account safe. Go tp Settings > Security to enable. The PTC account that you have been invited to has 2FA turned ON.
  2. Stay organized: Create a folder entitled “ABC123 Title of class” and upload all videos inside this folder.
  3. Rename in a meaningful way: It can be difficult to know how many words to have in your video title. Include courseID, course title, and any content identifiers that will help the Learner (or another Instructor) know what they are watching.
    • EX: Welcome to ABC123 - Intro to Dobies
    • EX: How To: Change File in Brightspace (no audio)
    • EX: IST405 Minnick 8 Chapter 01
  4. Keep video UNLISTED: Students will be able to access any link that you provide for them. Unlisted simply means that the Vimeo community will not be able to search for your video.
  5. Add embed code or link to Brightspace: After determining if using the embed code or link is best suited for your class, copy and add to your Brightspace TEMPLATE and/or section.
    1. DO NOT use the Share option
    2. use the Link or Embed buttons to Copy
      • If you are viewing the video buttons are in the top right
      • If you are in the folder list view, use the buttons at the left side of the video row. Hover over the video to copy the link or embed code
    3. Watch How To: Add my recording to Brightspace (now audio) (Runtime: 1:45)
    4. Enter Brightspace Module
    5. Upload/Create in Brightspace
      1. Option 1 - Use embed code to create a Brightspace webpage
        1. Upload/Create > Create a File
        2. Insert Stuff > Enter Embed Code
        3. Copy Embed Code from Vimeo
        4. Paste > Next > Insert
        5. Enter a Title > Save and Close
      2. Option 2 - Use video link to create a Brightspace external link
        1. Upload/Create > Create a Link
        2. Add Title
        3. Copy link address from Vimeo
        4. Paste URL > Create
    6. Move new item up into appropriate location inline with content.
