What Can I Learn from Content Reporting?

Part of designing and facilitating an online course is asking yourself key questions about how people interact with your content.

  • Are they visiting all of the content, or are they picking and choosing topics?
  • How much time do they spend viewing course materials?
  • Are there people who are not visiting course content?

Looking at content statistics can help you answer these questions.

Content Statistics: Where do I find reports and what is available?

Where do I find content reports? These can be found in the Table of Contents under Related Tools > View Reports.

The statistics are split into two categories: Content Modules and Topics & Users

Content Modules and Topics

Provides a summary of:

  • the total number of users in the course
  • the number of users who have visited content
  • the average time spent in the Content tool

Users

This area provides a list of users, and allows you to track:

  • The number of times they have visited individual content topics
  • The average time spent on content topics
  • The last time they visited content topics

Remember...

Having access to content statistics isn’t enough: we need to understand how to interpret and apply this information. Keep in mind that the system is only tracking how long a content topic is open. Whether that time was spent reading the content or chatting with a friend can’t be confirmed. Content statistics are meant to provide you with insights into your learners’ behavior, but make sure to use your own intuition and professional judgment.
